Faster Shaving With Great Skin Comfort
In this video, I give you my full review of the Braun Series 3 Proskin Foil Shaver, Model 3040s. Currently, this shaver ranks at #1 on Amazon for the category of Men’s Foil Shavers.
Braun touts the Series 3 for faster shaving with great skin comfort. For those that shave their beard every one to three days, the electric foil shaver and precision trimmer are the perfect combination to get the job done quickly and efficiently.
What’s inside?
Inside the Braun Series 3 Proskin box, you get the shaver, charging cord, protective cap and brush. The shaver features and ergonomic rubber grip, 2 SensoFoil shaver elements for sensitive skin, a middle trimmer for difficult beard hair, and a precision trimmer for crisp edges.
Braun Series 3 vs Remington F5-5800
One of the closest competitors to the Braun Series 3 is the Remington F5-5800, which ranks #2 under Men’s Foil Shavers on Amazon. If you look at my previous video on the Remington F5-5800, you’ll notice that these two foil shavers are very similar, yet, carry a current price difference of roughly $20 between them.
As the Series 3 has 2 foil shaver elements with a middle trimmer in between, the Remington F5-5800 features virtually identical elements.
While the Braun Proskin costs just shy of $60, the Remington F5-5800 currently sells for a tad above $36.
Flex Head Technology
Both the Braun Series 3 and the F5-5800 feature respective flex head technology for efficient cutting, while contour to your face. However, the Braun Series also includes a MicroComb element surrounding its middle trimmer, which works to guide hairs into the cutting parts.
That said, we can see that the F5-5800 foil and cutter cassette has a larger middle trimmer than the Braun, as well as longer foil shaver elements.
Additionally, while the head of the Braun Series 3 is fixed in position with the ability of its elements to flex, the Remington F5-5800 shaver head provides the ability to pivot along any angle of the face, as well as flex.
Precision Trimmers
For total beard control, a precision trimmer sits on the back of both units, ready to take care of longer hairs and finishing touches. The difference here is that the Braun Series 3 precision trimmer slides up into the vertical cutting position, while the F5-5800 pops up horizontal. Of note, the Series 3 has no issue as it moves back and forth in either direction, while the F5-5800 will close on itself.
Battery Life
Focusing in on the batteries, both shavers feature their respective charging indicators with the Braun Series 3 utilizing a 3 LED light system vs the 20 point incremental scale of the the F5-5800.
While the Braun Series 3 takes a one hour charge for 45 minutes of cordless shaving, the Remington F5-5800 requires two hours of charge time for 60 minutes of cordless use. Both foil shavers also feature a 5 minute quick charge, good for one quick shave.
That said, it’s important to note that the F5-5800 can be used plugged in, while the Braun Series 3 cannot.
Wet or Dry Shave?
The Braun Series 3 Proskin works wet or dry, with water, gel or foam and is 100% waterproof up to 5 meters for easy cleaning. When disconnected from the charger, the hand-held part of this shaving appliance functions in a bath or shower.
With the Remington F5-5800, however, you must clean the head assembly only under water and the foil shaver is not for use in the bath or shower.
Replacment Parts
Turning to maintenance concerns, the foil and cutter cassette of both shaver units will eventually need replacement. The Braun Series 3 recommends replacing every 18 month vs the 6 month recommendation of the Remington F5-5800.
As such, any upfront savings on the F5-5800 will quickly erode as three replacements will be needed in an 18 month period, compared to one for the Braun Series 3.
Of further help, the Series 3 features a unique indicator light on the bottom front of the unit that will prompt you when a replacement is necessary.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the Braun Series 3 ProSkin and Remington F5-5800 were both able to work through my thicker beard and leave me with a super smooth shave that I was happy with. Either foil shaver will get the job done, but each comes with their own unique features, pricing, and replacement parts, and ultimately it will be up to you to decide which one best suites your preference and needs.
