Philips OneBlade

Are you looking for a grooming device that can do it all?

Well, Philips makes some of the world’s most popular beard trimmers. And they claim their OneBlade Face Unit is the “one blade”  you need to edge, shave and trim any length of hair.

So, we’re putting it to the test in our Philips OneBlade Model QP2520 _90 Review, Parts 1 and 2.

Philips OneBlade – Part 1 Summary

In Part 1, we test out the OneBlade Face Unit. And we want to see how it stacks up against another strong Philips contender – the Multigroom 7100. In the Part 1 video, we demo the Face Unit and Multigroom in a side-by-side beard trim.

Why are we comparing the OneBlade Face to the Multigroom?

Based on features and pricing structure, the Multigroom 5100 and Multigroom 7100 might get you the same, if not better, results with bigger bang for your buck. So, we need to put it to the test to make the right recommendation for our community.

Update: The Multigroom 5100 and 7100 are in limited supply. The Multigroom 7000 is the latest model available and our current GroomReviews recommendation. (See Multigroom 7000 Review)

Philips OneBlade – Part 2 Summary

In Part 2, we test the OneBlade Face Unit again. But this time, Paul offers a more in-depth view of the product. In the video, he uses each attachment to achieve a goatee from full beard. He goes step-by-step through the process to show the different levels you can trim the beard down, all the way to skin.

PART 1

And that brings us to Part 1 – Philips OneBlade Face Model QP2520_90 Review with Beard Trimmer Demo Comparison Against the Multigroom 5100.

Let’s start with a breakdown of the 3 models Philips has in its OneBlade series.

It’s important to know the differences here. While these 3 models look similar, the slight variations could make a difference in their ability to meet your beard trimming needs.

Philips OneBlade Face

The OneBlade Face, or base unit, comes with 1 replaceable blade, as well as 3 stubble combs lengths 1, 3 and 5 mm. It uses a nickel metal hydride battery and requires 8 hours of charge time for 45 min of use.

Philips OneBlade – Face and Body

The OneBlade Face and Body unit includes 2 replacement blades, 4 stubble combs lengths 1, 2, 3 and 5 mm, a 3 mm body comb, and a skin guard attachment for sensitive skin. Unlike the OneBlade Face unit, the Face and Body uses a lithium ion battery and requires half the time to charge at 4 hours for 60 minutes of use.

Philips OneBlade Pro

The OneBlade Pro’s differentiator is its 14-length precision comb attachment. This attachment allows you to trim at a length of .4 mm up to 10 mm. The unit also includes one replacement blade, a charging stand, a travel lock, and uses a lithium ion battery that only requires 1 hour of charge time for 90 minutes of use.

How do the OneBlade models compare in price?

Currently, the OneBlade Face is listed on Amazon Prime for around $33.99. The OneBlade Face and Body is just south of $50. You’ll find the Pro version for close to $80.

Now, this may seem reasonable, but what jumps out at us right away are the replacement parts!

When we see the words replacement blades, we automatically think future costs.

And upon further review, we can see these blades only last 4 months, assuming 2 uses per week.

So, if you’re thinking a OneBlade models will be your new grooming tool for the next year or 2, get ready to dish out some extra cash.

In addition, Philips makes it clear that this product does not shave as close as a traditional blade.

This is due to a tiny green guard preventing the blade from directly contacting your skin.

Here are Paul’s thoughts after testing the OneBlade Face Model QP2520 alongside the Multigroom 5100

The Pros

The OneBlade Face model is a decent trimmer. It doesn’t give the closest shave, but it gets the job done with ease. I personally did not experience any skin irritation as some of the product reviews indicated.

The Cons

I did find the device to be a bit clunky when working around the inner chin, under the lip. The blade is wide, so you risk taking off more than you intended around tight corners.

It’s a tad inconvenient that the OneBlade Face doesn’t come with a bag to hold all of the attachments. Many trimmers these days come with one.

I also wish it had an indicator light for battery life.

When comparing the Philips OneBlade Face against the Philips Multigroom…

The OneBlade performed best against the Multigroom on the mustache. Its smaller profile comb angled in with ease while the Multigroom’s larger attachment had difficulty getting into those tight corners.

However, the foil shaver on the Multigroom edged out the OneBlade for smoothness.

Part 1 Conclusion

The OneBlade Face is a good fit if you’re working with a shorter, tighter profile beard. It’s also a good option if you don’t mind leaving a touch of stubble after your shave.

But if you have a thicker beard like mine, the Multigroom 3000, 5000 and 7000 are better options. They’ll save you in cost and time over the OneBlade in the long run thanks to higher quality, more permanent parts. The OneBlade Pro would best match up to the Multigroom models.

However, at a price point of about $80 with the need for replacement parts, a Multigroom model makes more sense.  It runs around $50, doesn’t need replacement parts, and will probably last you up to 2 years.

Part 2

OK, so we came back for Round 2 on the OneBlade because the GroomReviews community wanted to see another demo. This time Paul shaves all the way down to the skin.

The goal with Part 2 is to see how smooth we can get the skin at the end. No product comparison this time, just the OneBlade Face, shaving down from a full beard to a goatee.

In this video, Paul walks you step-by-step through all the attachments included with the Philips OneBlade Face.

In the video, Paul starts with the 5mm comb attachment on his beard. Then, he slowly begins trimming down his beard with the 3mm, followed by 1mm attachments. To finish, he uses the OneBlade razor itself, shaving down to the skin to see what’s achievable with this trimmer.

New Perspective from Paul

After using the OneBlade Face for a second time, working down to the skin, I definitely have a new perspective.  For those trimming tight to the face, the Philips OneBlade is a great fit.

I kept my goatee thicker with this trim. The comb attachments are not large enough to work in there.

However,  other beard trimmers, such as the Philips Multigroom 7000 (see full review here) are helpful with those with thicker beard cutting needs.

Final Thoughts on the Philips OneBlade

Overall, the Philips OneBlade Face Model QP2520 is a quality beard trimmer and shaver. It will not get you a completely clean shave, but will get you close enough. At the end of the day, you can achieve a great stubble look and find the detail you’re looking for.

I highly recommend the Philips OneBlade Face – Model QP2520_90.

For its price on Amazon, it’s worth a try, especially if it’s summer and you need to ditch the big beard for that cooler, short stubble look.

Good Luck!
